Week 5 - Term 1

28th February 2022 - 4 March 2022

The term is going so fast, to think at the end of the week we will be in March.
We have settled in well to our learning and the children are going well. They are getting used to my expectations and making adjustments to their expectations.  I set the expectations high and with always striving to do our best and moving out of our comfort zone to challenge ourselves.

We missed out on swimming at the beginning of last week due to the pool having maintenance done, however we ended the week with some great lessons with Henk.  I can see the difference in the children with their swimming. We also had to postpone Mr Billing from JPC as he was unwell however we will reschedule building the Rat Traps when he is able to fit us in.

The children have noted that Room 5 have made their own masks and they have expressed an interest to do this themselves and I thought it would be a great activity for them to do.  To make the masks we will need materials and if you are able to help I would greatly appreciate.

Can you help us, we would like to make masks,

we need:

  • material for making masks (close weave cotton is the best)
  • elastic.
On Friday, we were able to celebrate the beginning of the school year with an outside mass..  The weather was perfect and the children enjoyed the opportunity to have a celebration with Father and the rest of the school.

Midweek - Week 4

Aren't they are gorgeous bunch

Midweek already, the time seems to be going so fast.  We were meant to have Mr Billing from JPC with us today to help us build Rat Traps but unfortunately he had to postpone. I will let you know when he is able to come in to work with us.  We still completed the learning activities that went along with the building of them so we will be prepared when he comes in.

We must wear masks at school and most days I have children coming in and have forgotten their masks. I am running out of disposable masks quickly. Can you please check that your child has their masks.  The children noted that Mrs Todd's class has made masks and they are keen to do this also.  I think this would be a great activity.  If you have some scrap material at home that we could use would be great and I will look into them making their own mask.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are an essential part of our daily learning. Each day this week there has been at least one Chromebook running out of battery. Please remind your child that they need to charge their Chromebooks each night.

Have you completed the Swimming Form (Hot chips up for grabs)                        - Swimming Sports Form

21/2/2022

Hello everyone

Welcome to Week 4 - the time is going by so fast.

I hope the children have been sharing what learning we have been doing in the classroom. They have shown me that they can produce some fantastic work and are up for a challenge.  I have really enjoyed my week getting to know them and seeing their personalities starting to emerge.

We have had our first week with swimming with Henk. Henk will be joining us again this week so please remind the children to bring their togs. We will be swimming everyday.

One of our class members has been performing in the show Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.  Her final show was on Saturday. Congratulations Willow, I have heard fantastic reviews about the show.

On Wednesday, Mr Billings (JPC Science Teacher) will be working with our class to build rat traps.  If the children could bring a change of clothes (old clothes) as we will be painting and this paint will not wash out. I will bring a few old tshirts in case someone forgets.

 Mid Week 3

Swimming

We have been making the most of the beautiful weather this week.

The children have enjoyed swimming this week and we have been lucky to have great weather.

Time Capsule

In 2015 I made a Time Capsule with my class at Selwyn Primary School. I had left in in my class at the time with a note for it to be opened in 2020, however the teacher had forgotten about it.  She found the Time Capsule as she was moving classes during the holidays and contacted me to see if I would like it.

Room 3, have been making a small Time Capsule where they completed a sheet about themselves.  Today we placed them in an envelope and we will open it at the end of the year.  After we sealed the envelope, we opened the time capsule from my previous class.  The children enjoyed looking through everything, seeing the photos, reading the All About Me booklets from  the children and reading the magazines.

Fitness

We have been going out for Fitness everyday and enjoying our mask free time.  This week the children have been playing Master Tag.

We have had a few issues this week with Pokemon cards. It may be a good idea if the children leave their cards at home at the moment.

 Week 3 2022

Swimming starts this week!

We have had a good start of the year and getting to know everyone in our class. I think, yes I have got it, I can remember who is who and then they take their masks off when we go out for fitness and they look so different.  The children have done really well with wearing their masks but we are trying to remember to make sure we have regular mask breaks and go outside.  We have moved outside to complete our tasks at times to give us a break.

Our main focus last week was to get to know everyone. With being new to the school, I was finding my way around and getting to know the routines. The children have been great with this as well.  We did get some learning done though, learning expectations both ways and identifying some classroom rules and routines together.

We completed a Te Tiriti o Waitangi task which we have placed on our wall and this will be used to help us develop our Classroom Treaty this week.

Swimming Sports 2022

Our swimming sports are coming up on March 10 and we are always looking for parent helpers. If you are able to help, please contact email  sports@stmarysrotorua.school.nz

Our First Week

Half way through our first week already and we have had a great start to the new year.  This week we are focusing on getting to know each other and I have to say I have a beautiful class. The children are lovely and have made my transition to St Mary's easy.  It certainly have made me feel like, I have made the right decision.

Now it really feels like a class with the children in it.  The children and I are beginning to build our routines and they are coping well with the masks.  We are trying to have many mask breaks and have been lucky that the rain has held off so far.

Monday 7 February 2022

Back to School.

 Hi everyone

I am sorry the Blog is a little late - I am still getting used to having to do a Blog.  I plan to have it done by 3pm Sunday afternoon.

It was so great to meet you and the children last week.  What a beautiful class I am going to have. I found the children great to talk to and they were mostly enthusiastic to share about themselves with me.  I am sure as the time goes on and they get to know me I will learn so much more about them.  It was also great to see some familiar faces, cousins of children I had taught, friends of children I had taught and even managed to have a sibling I had taught.  There was even someone who knew my children.

A New Year

It is a new start, a new year group, a new class,  a new teacher, and there will be new friends as well.   We have some children where it is a new school as well.  I would like to welcome, Trisha, Apollo and Mathew to St Mary's.

What's Happening

This week it is about getting to know each other, getting to know me and vice versa. It is also about finding out about the new routines and we will talk about and set guidelines for our expectations.

When you came to meet me, I asked the children to bring a photo with them on Tuesday. Just one photo, of something that is special to them. It may be a special time, person, pet, place or an object.  Something they would like to share with others.

Hats and Masks

Hats and masks are needed for school.

Masks are to be worn in class by children and the teacher.  The children do not need to wear them when we are outside.

When we go outside we will remove our mask (each child will have a paper bag to keep them in) and replace it with their hat.

Looking forward to getting to know the children.
I will see them tomorrow.
